EMI Wants to Hold On to Abbey Road Studios

Music company EMI wants to retain ownership of the Abbey Road recording studios, immortalized by the Beatles album of the same name, though it is talking to other parties about revitalizing the site, EMI said on Sunday.

Abbey Road Sign, London

A source familiar with the situation told Reuters last week that loss-making EMI had put the studios up for sale and was talking to a few interested firms, although no deal was imminent.

"EMI confirms that it is holding preliminary discussions for the revitalization of Abbey Road with interested and appropriate third parties," the company said in a statement, without elaborating on what exactly the talks were about.

EMI said it had been in discussions since November 2009 to find ways to regenerate the studios, which have been losing money for years, but had rejected an offer worth 30 million pounds ( million).

"We believe that Abbey Road should remain in EMI's ownership," the company said.

Charlie Munger's Pessimistic Parable of Financial Ruin: 'Basically, It's Over'

Warren Buffett's longtime business partner Charlie Munger get along so well, in part, because they have very different, but complementary, temperaments.

Buffett oftens laughs and makes jokes when he speaks publicly. Munger is more likely to growl, and he makes no attempt to be diplomatic. Last May, he told our Becky Quick that the banks' "evil and folly" had "helped create a catastrophe for everyone."

Fortune Magazine's 2006 profile of Munger includes this apt description of how the two men interact on stage during the marathon Q&A session that highlights each year's Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting in Omaha:

Over the years the Buffett-and-Munger show has taken on a somewhat formulaic choreography. The two men sit center stage, facing a dark sea of shareholders. Questions are usually fielded first by Buffett, who will answer and then ramble a bit in his inimitable way - often with a one-liner or two mixed in - for five minutes or so.

At that point he will look over to his partner and inquire, "Charlie?" Then one of two things occurs: Munger will either lean in and make a pointed, pithy, often scathing comment (which sometimes elicits gasps or loud guffaws from the crowd). Or Munger will simply remark, "I have nothing to say." (Which, after a particularly long-winded Buffett digression, can be amusing as well.)

Usually Munger doesn't have all that much to say in public, but there are exceptions.(Gw Equity Inc - Gw Equity Llc)

Toyota Memo Raises Stakes for US Congressional Hearings

New documents raised fresh questions about whether Toyota Motor stalled a U.S. regulatory response to red flags about its vehicle safety as the company prepares to defend itself at congressional hearings this week.

Toyota's President Akio Toyoda testifies before U.S. lawmakers this week in an effort to contain a safety crisis that threatens the reputation and continued success of the automaker in the market that made it a global powerhouse.

But a 2009 internal document turned over to lawmakers and made available on Sunday shows Toyota's Washington D.C. staff trumpeting savings of over 0 million by convincing regulators to end a 2007 investigation of sudden acceleration complaints with a relatively cheap floormat recall.

The document seems certain to add to the high-stakes debate about whether Toyota missed or ignored complaints about sudden acceleration in its vehicles and whether U.S. safety regulators were tough enough. Gw Equity Inc

Ex-US Treasury Secretaries Back Volcker Rule

Five former Treasury secretaries urged Congress Sunday to bar banks that receive federal support from engaging in speculative activity unrelated to basic bank services.

Former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker

"The principle can be simply stated," the five said in a letter to The Wall Street Journal. "Banks benefiting from public support by means of access to the Federal Reserve and FDIC insurance should not engage in essentially speculative activity unrelated to essential bank services."

The Treasury secretaries said, however, that hedge funds, private-equity firms and other organizations engaged in speculative trading should be "free to compete and innovate" but should not expect taxpayers to back up their endeavors.
